This Porsche 911 flat-six was rebuilt and modified to displace 2.5 liters at European Autowerke of Fall City, Washington, in 2013. The aluminum sand-cast case was boat-tailed and bored to accept 90mm forged and domed JE Pistons, and it was fitted with reconditioned Nikasil cylinders, ported twin-plug cylinder heads, Dougherty Racing camshafts, a Magneti Marelli Bluetooth-adjustable distributor, and dual 40mm Weber carburetors. Additional equipment includes case oil squirters, an oil bypass kit, a polished and balanced crankshaft, rebuilt and balanced connecting rods, replacement valves and guides, and a later model countershaft assembly and timing chain housings. This modified Type 901/05 engine is now offered at no reserve in Spring Glen, Washington, with build records.

The early 2.0L sand-cast case was boat-tailed, the bore alignment was checked, and the spigots were bored to accept 90mm forged and domed JE Pistons with a 9.8:1 compression ratio at Ollie’s of Lake Havasu City, Arizona. The reconditioned 2.7-liter cylinder heads have been modified for twin plugs on each cylinder, decked, and port-matched, and the Nikasil cylinders were reconditioned at EBS Racing of Sparks, Nevada. Additional work included:

  • Installing an oil bypass kit and case oil squirters
  • Resurfacing the camshaft boxes and replacing the oil spray bars
  • Magnafluxing, polishing, and balancing the crankshaft
  • Rebuilding and balancing the connecting rods
  • Installing Dougherty Racing Cams DC-40 camshafts
  • Replacing the valves and guides
  • Performing a three-angle valve job
  • Installing a later model countershaft assembly and timing chain housings
  • Resurfacing the valve covers

Weber 40IDA3C/1 carburetors were rebuilt at Performance Oriented of Chico, California, in January 2013 and mounted atop tall PMO intake manifolds. Work included replacing the throttle shafts, throttle shaft couplings, and vent pipes along with bead blasting the exteriors, drilling anti-percolation holes in the top covers, enlarging the throttle bores to 42mm, and modifying the existing main venturis to suit the 42mm exit bores.

The ignition system utilizes a 123ignition-sourced black top twin-plug Magneti Marelli distributor with a 27mm shaft, a hold-down clamp, and Bluetooth connectivity for setting the timing curve through a smart phone app.

Engine number *909399* stamped on the case corresponds to a 2.0-liter Type 901/05 from a 1967 911 coupe.
